One day Muslims in this country will, I hope, stop answering every question that is put to them, and worse, anticipating such questions and offering defenses before the fact. On Oct 5th the Fiqh Council of North America published a “Resolution on Being Faithful Muslims and Loyal Americans.” Do they honestly think that issuing a declaration assuring the rest of the country that we really, honestly, truly are not treacherous or violent will accomplish anything positive? Do Muslims not understand the concept of “I will not dignify that with a response”?
Can one imagine a declaration by a council of rabbis to the effect of, “Jews are not greedy, but are as noble as other Americans”? They could then call on all Jews to not try to exercise control over government and media with their wealth. Or how about a council of African American leaders issuing a resolution, “Blacks are no lazier than other Americans”? Then they could call on American blacks not to commit crimes.
Why is the Fiqh Council meeting bigtory half-way? Many Americans do not know much about Islam, and Muslims have a certain responsibility to educate, since they are the ones with the knowledge. But this statement offers no context, no justification for its very existence. Did someone ask them to do it? Do they think that Muslims, as a rule, have to go around volunteering declarations of loyalty? If so, why only Muslims?
